Zeche Zollverein
Germany | Essen
2013

Once the largest colliery in Europe is transformed into a cultural place that combines dining, design and architecture. In 2001 Zollverein former colliery became part of UNESCO World Heritage List and this was the start for new programs. The masterplan designed by OMA consist of a band around the historic site. New roads and the extension of an existing highway through a tunnel servicing the site will allow for an easier access. The rail tracks inside the site will be maintained as public space, and will connect the main buildings. The sky bridges for transporting coal will be opened for visitors. The old buildings maintain their grandeur and impact on the visitor.
